Lecture Series "Ireland in the World"

We are excited to announce a lecture series scheduled at UZH for the fall semester 2021.

From early medieval monks to nineteenth-century emigrants, Irish history has been marked by – voluntary and enforced – encounters with Britain, Europe, and the wider world. Recently, moreover, the fallout of the economic boom and bust of the 1990s and 2000s, together with the challenge of Brexit, have forced a redefinition of the country’s global position.

This lecture series will re-examine Ireland’s long and fascinating history from a range of disciplinary perspectives (e.g. linguistic, literary, and sociological). The talks will be open to students from all Swiss universities, as well as to the general public, as a forum for reflection and debate organized by the Swiss Centre of Irish Studies @ the Zurich James Joyce Foundation.
