New Faculty Members

We are please to welcome three new faculty members, welcome to the department!

We are excited to welcome three new professors at the Department of Economics!

Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee are joining us as Lemann Foundation Professors in Economics. Their research sits at the crossroads of development economics, behavioral economics, and public policy, centered on using rigorous experimentation to determine what genuinely lifts people out of poverty. They were pioneers in bringing randomized controlled trials into economics, co-founding the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) to deploy this approach on a global scale. Their research addresses microfinance and household financial behavior, the design of health and education programs in low-income settings, and the psychological and structural forces that shape decision-making among the poor.

Bernardo Silveira is joining our department as Professor of Applied Microeconomics. His work lies at the intersection of industrial organization, law and economics, and political economy, with a focus on how institutions shape strategic behavior. He studies bargaining and dispute resolution, the design and effectiveness of regulation and law enforcement, and the structural econometrics of incomplete‑information models.

Welcome to the department!
