A heartfelt congratulation to David Yanagizawa-Drott, Professor of Development and Emerging Markets and Affiliated Professor at the UBS Center, who has been awarded the Yrjö Jahnsson Award from the European Economic Association (EEA). Yanagizawa shares this award with Julia Cagé, Professor of Economics (Sciences Po Paris).

This award recognizes their work on political economy and the media, based on deep historical research in France, the USA, and Africa. A key and timely insight from their work is the critical role that media and social media play in shaping political beliefs and motivating political action, as well as the dangers posed by controlled media. Their findings highlight the essential role of media independence for the sake of a healthy democracy.
